UA Christian Staff and Faculty Fellowship - Chapter 4 - What difference would Christian scholarship make? 3/17

Come to the Christian Faculty and Staff Fellowship on Wednesday, 3/17, at 11:45 AM (done by 12:45 PM).

We'll finish Chapter 4 of The Outrageous Idea of Christian Scholarship by George M. Marsden. If Christians are informing their scholarship with their faith, what would that look like and what difference would it make? The Amazon links are:

From the abstract on Amazon: "Marsden argues forcefully that mainstream American higher education needs to be more open to explicit expressions of faith and to accept what faith means in an intellectual context."

Meeting logistics

We'll continue to meet on Zoom until it's clear that staff, faculty, and students are fully back on campus and pursuing their regular activities. I'll keep checking for announcements about that.

The Zoom link is: https://us02web.zoom.us/j/87919167217?pwd=cVJjbHhUaXhidllPMkM1UXVCbzc0QT09

You're welcome to eat your lunch during the session.

Items of interest

The next update will have a link to a book survey so we can select a book to discuss during the fall term. If you have ideas of books to discuss, let me know, and I'll put it in the survey.

Check out the Perkins Bible studies on YouTube. From the About page: The John and Vera Mae Perkins Foundation for Justice, Reconciliation & Community Development (JVMPF) is a non-profit organization that teaches and promotes the principles of Christian Community development and racial reconciliation. They are in Jackson, MS.

The attached email is a special webinar interview with Rosaria Butterfield and Ken Smith. We discussed Rosaria's book, The Gospel Comes with a Housekey, a couple of semesters ago.

Phil Bishop recommended this webinar featuring Dr. John Lennox (Professor of Mathematics Emeritus at Oxford University) discussing whether science and philosophy have buried God. This is relevant to the discussions we're having on Professor Marsden's book.

Upcoming speaker: Rev Peter Leithart, President of the Theopolis Institute, on 3/31.

These happened on 3/17

  • 1737 Americans celebrated Saint Patrick's Day for the first time in a municipal setting.
  • 1941. James R. Murray was born. One of his melodies, MUELLER, was the music for the Christmas hymn, "Away in a Manger."
