UA Christian Staff and Faculty Fellowship - Chapter 3: Christian scholarship and the rules of the academic game, 2/17
Join us at the Christian Faculty and Staff Fellowship on Wednesday, 2/17, at 11:45 AM (done by 12:45 PM).
Meeting logistics
We'll continue to meet on Zoom until it's clear that staff, faculty, and students are fully back on campus and pursuing their regular activities. I'll keep checking for announcements about that.
The Zoom link is: https://us02web.zoom.us/j/87919167217?pwd=cVJjbHhUaXhidllPMkM1UXVCbzc0QT09
You're welcome to eat your lunch during the session.
But wait, there's more!
- We'll start Chapter
3 of The Outrageous Idea of Christian Scholarship by George
M. Marsden. The Amazon links are:
- Paperback: https://amzn.to/3pIQRwL
- Kindle: https://amzn.to/32W0iPM
- From the abstract on Amazon: "Marsden argues forcefully that mainstream American higher education needs to be more open to explicit expressions of faith and to accept what faith means in an intellectual context."
Items of interest
Professor George Marsden, author of the book we're discussing, will Zoom in on 2/24. He is Professor Emeritus at Notre Dame and Distinguished Scholar in the History of Christianity at Calvin Theological Seminary. His background includes receiving the Bancroft Prize for his biography of Jonathan Edwards, Jonathan Edwards: A Life.
Other upcoming speakers include:
- Peter Bonilla, Vice President of Programs for
Foundation for Individual Rights in Education, on 3/3.
- Rev Peter Leithart, President of the Theopolis Institute, on 3/31.
If you'd like to facilitate a session
You're welcome to facilitate one of our meetings as
well. Since we're still meeting virtually, the current schedule is also online for your reference.
Some things you might want to do:
- Facilitate the discussion of the current chapter of the book we're
going through. That involves asking questions and inviting responses.
- Giving a discipline talk about what you're doing in your area. It's
a chance to get to know you and what you're doing at UA.
- Bring in a guest speaker (we can also dial up someone on
speakerphone).
- Invite your pastor or college minister to chat about college
students in your church.
- Etc. That's a catch-all in case you have a great idea about something else for our lunch gathering.
These happened on 2/17
- 1889. Billy Sunday, a baseball player who became an evangelist, made
his 1st preaching appearance in Chicago..
- 1972 Pat Terry was born. He formed the Pat Terry Group and recorded
a number of Christian songs, including Home Where I
Belong.
