Bill Keel reports on what astronomers are up to.
- In addition to meeting with the American Astronomical Society where,
in keeping with our social distancing, the meeting went online this year,
complete with avatars wandering a virtual coffee hall so they could
interact with each other and choose which session to walk into, he
participated in the Christian astronomers' lunch on Zoom (please note the
screenshot is for those on the mailing list only, not for general
forwarding).
- From Bill: Among the thoughtful heads are the Hubble project
scientist from NASA, the head of the BioLogos science/faith project, and
author of a recent book on the Star of Bethlehem.
- Also from Bill:
- The head of BioLogos recommended this discussion
with Francis Collins (of the Human Genome Project) about issues of
science and faith brought to the fore during the pandemic: https://biologos.org/resources/francis-collins-on-science-and-faith-during-covid-19
- One of our members mentioned that Colllins was
also music director of a Michigan church earlier in his career.
- Collins also did a conversation event with Tim Keller: https://biologos.org/resources/where-is-god-in-a-pandemic
On 6/17:
- 1703. John Wesley was born. He went on to found the Methodist
movement.
- 1822. The African Methodist Episcopal Zion Church grew from the
first elders elected in New York City.
- 1963. The US Supreme Court ruled that requiring prayer and Bible
reading in public schools was unconstitutional.
