Christian faculty and staff gathering on Zoom on April 29 - Meet Brother Lawrence

Did you know April 29 is Shrimp Scampi Day? Apparently, shrimp and scampi are different critters. It seems scampi are shrimp, but shrimp aren't scampi. An Internet search will turn up many recipes and articles. Since we spent the spring term thinking about Christian hospitality, shrimp scampi might be one of those dishes you can use when extending hospitality to others.

We had an amazingly rich session with Reverend Dr. Steven Ko, pastor of New York Chinese Alliance Church and MD. He shared background information on the pandemic and what was happening with his church. His main discussion was the Christian sacrifice of social distancing and the theology behind historical Christian responses to epidemics and pandemics.

We're going through the summer to maintain fellowship with each other during this pandemic. Join us in a Zoom Room on Wednesday, April 29 at noon Central. Here are the Zoom Room details:

Since we're social distancing, and some are feeling isolated, we'll turn back the clock and go through Brother Lawrence's The Practice of the Presence of God. We'll seek advice from one who, while maintaining a degree of isolation in his order, never lacked for companionship with God.

You can find the work at no cost in the Christian Classics Ethereal Library. It's also available for free at Project Gutenberg and the Internet Archive among other locations.

On 4/29:

  • 1607. The 1st Anglican church in the American colonies was established at Cape Henry, Virginia.
  • 1933. the Navigators trace their origin to this date. Dawson Trotman, the founder, began his work in San Pedro, California.
