Christian Faculty and Staff Fellowship meets September 4

Christian Faculty and Staff Network gathering on 9/4 - Work has dignity

Come to the Christian Faculty and Staff Network lunch gathering on Wednesday, September 4, at 11:45 AM (done by 12:45 PM). We meet at the Baptist Campus Ministries building (University Boulevard and 4th Avenue).

It's the best meal deal in town: You can get lunch there for $1 thanks to the generosity of local churches. Don't forget to thank the church workers for what they do for the students. The first meal of the term is special, so you won't want to miss it.

Our book for the term is Tim Keller's Every Good Endeavor: Connecting Your Work to God's Work. Here's a summary from the Amazon page: "With deep conviction and often surprising advice, Keller shows readers that biblical wisdom is immensely relevant to our questions about work today. In fact, the Christian view of work that we work to serve others, not ourselves can provide the foundation of a thriving professional and balanced personal life."

Bob Brooks will lead the discussion.

If you want a little light reading, the Institute for Faith, Work, and Economics published a report last year called Faith at Work: Economic Flourishing, Freedom to Create and Innovate. A few of the chapter titles include:

  • 'Devotion to high purpose' undergirds success
  • 12 theses for a Christian understanding of economics
  • Human flourishing: An urgent, universal, timeless goal
  • C. S. Lewis on selfishness vs. self-interest
  • What I didn't learn in business school

Here are some key dates that remind us of what has gone before us:

  • 1645. the 1st Lutheran church building in America was dedicated near Essington, Pennsylvania.
  • 1666. The Great Fire of London destroys old St. Paul’s Cathedral.
  • 1735. Robert Raikes was born. He worked in his parish to create Sabbath schools to help in the upbringing of children. The schools become popular, contributing to the development of the English school system. Many of us benefit from that legacy when we go to Sunday school.
