Christian Faculty and Staff Fellowship meets August 28

Christian Faculty and Staff Network gathering on 8/28 - Built to work

Come to the Christian Faculty and Staff Network lunch gathering on Wednesday, August 28, at 11:45 AM (done by 12:45 PM). We meet at the Baptist Campus Ministries building (University Boulevard and 4th Avenue).

It's the best meal deal in town: You can get lunch there for $1 thanks to the generosity of local churches. Don't forget to thank the church workers for what they do for the students. The first meal of the term is special, so you won't want to miss it.

Our book for the term is Tim Keller's Every Good Endeavor: Connecting Your Work to God's Work. Here's a summary from the Amazon page: "With deep conviction and often surprising advice, Keller shows readers that biblical wisdom is immensely relevant to our questions about work today. In fact, the Christian view of work that we work to serve others, not ourselves can provide the foundation of a thriving professional and balanced personal life."

We kicked off the semester with ideas about work from the book's Introduction and Chapter 1. Some tidbits:

  • God Himself worked.
  • God created work before the Fall in Eden.
  • God built us to work.
  • God left the Creation undone for us to work.
  • Work plays a significant role in giving life meaning.

We're looking forward to Phil Bishop of Cru facilitating the discussion.

I came across an extensive article about Chick-fil-A. It seems fairly handled and gives a glimpse at how the rest of the world might view a fully Christian business. Main points:

  • Success of the organization.
  • Unique business model.
  • Translating faith into operations.
  • Selecting who runs the restaurants.
  • Same-sex marriage controversy.
  • Plans for the future.

Today in the history of our faith:

  • 430. Death of St. Augustine of Hippo. Yes, that St. Augustine, who was central in shaping Christianity after the apostles.
  • 1953. Campus Crusade for Christ, founded by Bill and Vonette Bright, was incorporated in Los Angeles.
  • 1963. The March on Washington took place where Rev. Martin Luther King, Jr. gave his famous “I Have a Dream” speech.
