Christian Faculty and Staff Fellowship meets August 21

Christian Faculty Network resumes on 8/21

We resume our lunch meetings on 8/21/19. Come to the Christian Faculty Network lunch meeting on Wednesday, August 21, at 11:45 AM (done by 12:45 PM). We meet at the Baptist Campus Ministries building (University Boulevard and 4th Avenue).

It's the best meal deal in town: You can get lunch there for $1 thanks to the generosity of local churches. Don't forget to thank the church workers for what they do for the students. The first meal of the term is special, so you won't want to miss it.

Our book for the term is Tim Keller's Every Good Endeavor: Connecting Your Work to God's Work. Here's a summary from the Amazon page: "With deep conviction and often surprising advice, Keller shows readers that biblical wisdom is immensely relevant to our questions about work today. In fact, the Christian view of work that we work to serve others, not ourselves can provide the foundation of a thriving professional and balanced personal life."

You're welcome to consider facilitating a discussion on one of the book chapters during the semester. We'll also have time for different activities (guest speakers, discipline talks, etc.) on 3 different dates if you would like to take the lead on one of them.

Facilitating a discussion or doing something else will be especially helpful because I will be gone on 8/28 and 9/4.

Right now, Lauren Gill is scheduled to call in during our 9/11 meeting to talk about what Tim Keller's organization is doing to help people make the book's principles real. She's part of Redeemer Presbyterian Church's ministries and is a leader in their faith/work initiatives. Here's her background:

MANAGER, GLOBAL GOTHAM NETWORK AND FAITH & WORK COMMUNICATIONS

MANHATTAN, NY

  • A Kentucky native, Lauren moved to New York City to study acting and journalism at New York University. As an actress, Lauren has performed widely, from London to Off Broadway to Amish country, in pieces ranging from biblical musicals to Shakespeare’s classics.
  • Lauren has a Master's Degree in Counseling Psychology from Columbia University. She founded and operates The Redemptive Pursuit, a weekly devotional series for women. She is a graduate of the 2010 Gotham Fellowship class and has been working at Faith & Work since 2013. Having lived in the city for over a decade now, Lauren and her husband, Suneel, love exploring NYC’s culinary options. They live in Harlem.

Today in the history of the faith:

  • 1815. Joseph Mohr was ordained as a Catholic priest. We generally know him as the composer of "Silent Night."
  • 1930. From Frank Laubach's letter to his father on 8/21: "As I sit over in that old building day after day patiently toiling with one man or boy to teach him the alphabet, and so hold him to a larger world, I often wonder whether this work is becoming to a man of my age. But when that same man fondly runs his fingers through my hair and looks his love while he says 'Mapia bapa'—good uncle—I know that a little love is created." Frank Laubach was a missionary who used literacy efforts as his ministry platform.
