Christian Faculty and Staff Fellowship meets November 28
I hope everyone had a wonderful Thanksgiving and enjoyed the time off. We'll resume on 11/28 with a visit by Jennifer Waddell, Athletes in Action, thanks to Phil Bishop.
Next
semester's book: Love Your God with All
Your Mind: The Role of Reason in the Life of the Soul by J.P. Moreland
(NavPress, 2011). The title is linked to Amazon. Make sure to get the 2012
version. It's an updated version of the book from 1997. Moreland makes the case
for the intellectual appeal and rigor of Christianity. It has a cultural,
worldview, and apologetics outlook and is relevant to us who want to be salt
and light in the groves of academe. The book can be a basis for other readings
we would do.
Looking
ahead: I came across this announcement for the Dallas Conference on Science and Faith
in January 2019. It looks like it has a substantive agenda for those who
might be interested.
And
since we're on the subject of science and faith, today is Red Planet
Day to commemorate the launch of Mariner 4 that came within 6,118 miles of Mars.
John Carter did not return my calls for comment.
Today
- 1660 Speaking of science and faith, the Royal Society was founded when a group of English scholars listened to a lecture by Christopher Wren, designer and builder of St. Paul's cathedral. The king issued a charter a year later. Its core members were orthodox Christians.
- 1863 First observance of Thanksgiving as a US national holiday. Established as the last Thursday by President Abraham Lincoln, President Franklin Roosevelt moved it the 4th Thursday in 1939 to stimulate Christmas shopping, and Congress established the date in 1941. So we’re not the only era to hear Christmas music well before Christmas.
