Christian Faculty and Staff Fellowship meets on September 26
Join the Christian Faculty Network lunch bunch on Wednesday, September 26 at 11:45 AM (done by 12:45 PM). We meet at the Baptist Campus Ministries building (University Boulevard and 4th Avenue).
Don’t forget: You can get lunch there for $1 thanks to the generosity of local churches. September 26 may be National Pancake Day, but I don't know if that will be served up for lunch. Sorry! No matter, it will be a great meal as always. Don't forget to thank the church workers for what they do for the students.
Many thanks to
Blake McKinney for facilitating an engaging conversation last Wednesday about
Chapter 4 of The Prodigal God. Some intriguing bits of the conversation
that are food for thought:
- Dietrich Bonhoeffer said Christians
should be reckless.
- Focus on mission, not what you'll get in return.
Liz Stovall will facilitate our discussion of Chapter 5 of The Prodigal God. It promises to be a great discussion.
Today in the
history of Christianity and the church:
- 1626 Lancelot Andrewes died. An Anglican bishop, he was one of the scholars King James I appointed to create an official English translation of the Bible, what we know today as the King James Version. He was known for his private devotion and generous giving. Some new doctors may wear the Bishop Andrewes cap at graduation.
- 1774 Jonathan Chapman was born. He traveled throughout pioneer settlements handing out gospel tracts and planting apple seeds. We know him as Johnny Appleseed, and September 26 is Johnny Appleseed Day.
- 1861 William Faber died. A prolific hymn writer, he wrote "Faith of our Fathers" and "There's a Wideness in God's Mercy."
Here's an
interesting essay by Kenneth G. Elzinga, Robert C. Taylor Professor of
Economics at the University of Virginia, called "Christian Academe vs.
Christians in Academe." Some points from the essay:
- "Privatizers in higher
education view their faith as disconnected from their work as
professors."
- "The professors, researchers,
and scholars in higher education I have labeled the evangelicals believe
that the quest for truth begins and ends with Jesus."
